Processed waster from commercial buildings and domestic households has the potential to pollute lakes and rivers as they carry wastewater and excrement through a sewer system. The raw sewage contained waste products including laundry waste. There are approximately 4,000,000 people in Liberia, so treating and proper disposal of sewage is a compliance priority to D-E, because the lack of proper management of commercial and domestic household sewage/wastewater will trigger the following adverse effects as Liberia is not exempt from these facts:
- Sewage spill can cause health hazards, damage homes and business, threaten the environment, and local water ways
- Sewage disposal is a major problem in developing countries as many communities don’t have access to sanitary conditions and clean water.
- Untreated sewage water will contaminate the environment and cause diseases such as diarrhea.
- Flushing unacceptable materials or hazardous substances into toilet or sink could cause a sewage spills.
- When people are ill, the sewage often carries harmful viruses and bacteria into the environment causing health problems.
D-E is aware that many cities in Monrovia and other major cities sewage collection infrastructure that are between 30 and 100 years old pose a high risk for leaks, blockage and malfunction due to long period of deterioration. Our compliance partnership team is prepared to work with the various line ministries of the government and communities to provide a community environmental stewardship education aimed at reducing the existing impact.
